News Corp., the parent company of Dow Jones and the New York Post, has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity, an AI search engine, for copyright infringement.
News Corp. claims that Perplexity copied large portions of its news content, such as articles from The Wall Street Journal, to train its AI without permission. The lawsuit alleges that Perplexity’s search answers often include verbatim or paraphrased text from News Corp. publications, potentially steering users away from the original websites and costing News Corp. valuable traffic.
Additionally, the lawsuit points to hallucinations in Perplexity’s AI output—incorrect or fabricated information attributed to Dow Jones or the New York Post.
This misattribution, News Corp. argues, risks harming its reputation as it may lead users to believe false information came from their trusted sources. News Corp. is seeking damages of up to $150,000 per infringement and a court order to stop Perplexity from using its content.
