Irish Watchdog Ends Case Against X Following AI Data Restrictions
What Happened
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has officially dropped its legal case against X (formerly Twitter) after the platform agreed to permanently restrict the use of European users’ personal data for AI training.
This comes after X paused its data processing for the AI chatbot Grok in August, following legal pressure from the DPC. Under the agreement, X is now prohibited from processing personal data for AI model training without obtaining explicit user consent.
While the specific details of the agreement remain undisclosed, it’s evident that the platform must adhere to much stricter data protection measures regarding AI. X has not yet issued a public statement about the resolution.
Why It Matters:
This case highlights regulators’ push for stricter data protection in AI development, with X dodging fines but facing growing scrutiny under GDPR rules, potentially influencing broader AI data practices across the EU.
